LoginID and Canterbury Taxis Ltd. Partner Up to Provide FIDO Biometric Authentication to Riders

Canterbury Taxis is currently utilizing FIDO biometric authentication to ensure security and customer experience for their riders.

Canterbury Taxis has become the first independent taxi company in the UK to authenticate their customers using FIDO. Canterbury Taxi was founded in 2000 by Mr. Ian Brenchley. Starting with only 1 taxi, they have since grown rapidly and expanded to 15 taxis and over 48,000 riders per month. Prospective riders and current customers can visit the website to book a ride or estimate the cost of one.

However, in late 2021, Canterbury Taxis experienced a malicious attack on their system. Fortunately, the company was able to avoid any data breaches. Nevertheless, the company decided they wanted to enhance their security by adding biometric authentication measures to their web page.

LoginID spoke with Ian Brenchley about his experience with FIDO biometric authentication so far.

What were some of the challenges that Canterbury Taxi faced?

Canterbury Taxis is entirely web-based and does not have an Android or iOS app. So, having used the protocol of a Progressive Webapp to create the app-like experience for their users, the only path forward was to create a new Signup / Signin process using FIDO biometric authentication.

This involved building an API for the PWA using LoginID’s Web toolkits, which was a challenge. Canterbury Taxis quickly noticed they were the first web page application in the UK to have installed this type of biometrics security solution for their clients using a PWA.

Moving with mobile tech advances, installing LoginID has made Canterbury Taxis a leader in data security, which without LoginID, only global companies could normally afford.

The customer support was exemplary! For every enquiry there was a real time answer within a few hours, even outside business hours of LoginID. Additional time zone constraints made our customer experience even more impressive.With one on one support from the technical team to our developer and management.

What led you to decide to reach out?

Looking ahead to prevent security breaches which potentially could cost us 4% of our annual turnover due to the legal obligations UK companies have with data protection and the ICO.
